George Alexander Albrecht was born in Bremen in 1935, the younger son of the physician and philosopher Carl Eduard Albrecht and Adda Albrecht, née Berg, and a great-great-grandson of Baron Ludwig Knoop. He studied violin, piano and conducting, and in 1965, at thirty, became Generalmusikdirektor of the Staatsoper Hannover — at the time the youngest holder of such a post in Germany.
He remained in Hannover for some three decades, an unusually long tenure that gave the house a settled identity across a period when German opera leadership turned over rapidly. In 1996 he took up the Generalmusikdirektor post at the Nationaltheater Weimar, and from 2002 was honorary conductor of the Staatskapelle Weimar. He also taught, and was made an honorary professor at the Franz Liszt Hochschule für Musik.
He composed as well as conducted, and did so increasingly late in life: a Requiem für Syrien in 2018 and a Sinfonia di due Mondi in 2019, both written in his eighties. He held the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
He was the elder brother of the politician Ernst Albrecht, the father of the conductor Marc Albrecht, and the uncle of Ursula von der Leyen. He died in 2021.
