Биография

Джон Филдcomposer / pianist с корнями из Russian Empire

John Field was born in Dublin in July 1782 into a musical family — his father a violinist, his grandfather an organist — and made his solo debut at nine. The family moved to London in 1793, where he was apprenticed to Muzio Clementi: composer, publisher, and manufacturer of pianos. Field premiered his First Piano Concerto at sixteen and was well established in London by his late teens.

In the summer of 1802 Clementi took him on a business trip across Europe, demonstrating the firm's instruments. They went through Paris to Vienna, where Field studied counterpoint briefly and met Beethoven, who thought highly of his playing, and reached Saint Petersburg in early winter. Field found the artistic life there better than anything he had left behind and decided to stay. Clementi went home in June 1803, having first secured his young employee a well-paid teaching position.

He never lived anywhere else again. He toured the Baltic provinces in 1805, gave his first Moscow concert in 1806, married the French pianist Adelaide Percheron — a former pupil — in 1810, and returned to Saint Petersburg in 1811 for a decade. Teaching the Russian aristocracy proved extremely lucrative and his manner of living became correspondingly expansive.

It was in Russia that his music changed. The disciplined sonatas and variations of his London years gave way to something looser and more atmospheric, built on a singing melody over a spread accompaniment, with heavy use of the sustaining pedal and elastic time. He called these pieces nocturnes and wrote eighteen of them. Chopin, Liszt, Glinka and Brahms all built on the form; Chopin's are far better known today. The genre itself was invented by an Irishman working in Saint Petersburg and Moscow.

His later years were hard. His wife left him, he drank heavily, and by 1831 he was seriously ill with cancer. He went to London for surgery, was reunited with his mother before her death, and carried Clementi's coffin at his funeral in 1832. He toured Europe, spent nine months in a Naples hospital, and was eventually rescued by Russian aristocratic friends who brought him back to Moscow in 1835 by way of Vienna. He composed his last nocturnes there, gave his final concert in March 1836, and died of pneumonia in Moscow in January 1837, aged fifty-four. He is buried in the Vvedenskoye Cemetery.
