Leonhard Euler was born in Basel in April 1707 and studied there under Johann Bernoulli, whose sons Daniel and Nicolas became his friends. Switzerland had no post for him. In 1727, aged twenty, he accepted a position at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences — an institution founded only two years earlier, which was recruiting across Europe — on an invitation arranged largely by Daniel Bernoulli. He arrived in May of that year and Russia became the setting for most of his working life.
His start was oblique: he was first attached to the physiology section and worked for a time for the Russian navy. In 1730 he was given a full professorship in physics, and in 1733, at twenty-six, he succeeded Daniel Bernoulli in the chair of mathematics. He married Katharina Gsell, daughter of a Swiss painter working in Russia; they had thirteen children, of whom five reached adulthood.
In 1741 he left for Frederick the Great's Berlin Academy, where he spent twenty-five years. Relations with the king deteriorated, and in 1766 Catherine II invited him back to Saint Petersburg on generous terms that included positions for his sons. He accepted and never left again.
The second Russian period was materially difficult and mathematically extraordinary. A cataract took the sight of his remaining good eye and by 1771 he was entirely blind. That same year his house burned down and he was carried out by a servant. His wife died in 1773. Working from memory and dictation, assisted by his son Johann Albrecht — professor of physics at the Academy and later its secretary — and by colleagues including Lexell, Krafft and the young Nicolas Fuss, he produced close to half his total output after going blind.
He died in Saint Petersburg on 18 September 1783, aged seventy-six, of a brain haemorrhage, having worked that day. He was buried at the Smolensk Lutheran Cemetery. He published some 560 books and papers in his lifetime, and left so much unpublished material that the Academy went on issuing it for roughly fifty years after his death. The collected Opera Omnia runs past seventy volumes. A substantial share of all mathematical and physical research produced in Europe between 1730 and 1780 was written in Saint Petersburg by one man.
