King Frederik X of Denmark — king of denmark with roots in the Russian Empire
Frederik André Henrik Christian was born at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen on 26 May 1968, the elder son of Crown Princess Margrethe and Prince Henrik. His younger brother is Prince Joachim. He became crown prince when his mother succeeded to the throne in January 1972, at the age of three.
His Russian descent runs through four generations of the Danish royal house. His great-grandmother, Queen Alexandrine, wife of Christian X, was the daughter of Grand Duchess Anastasia Mikhailovna of Russia, born at Peterhof in 1860, the daughter of Grand Duke Michael Nikolayevich and a granddaughter of Emperor Nicholas I. Alexandrine's son became King Frederick IX, whose daughter Margrethe became queen; Frederik is her son. Through the same Romanov line he is related to the descendants of Alexandrine's sister Cecilie, the German Crown Princess, and through his aunt Anne-Marie, wife of Constantine II, to the Greek royal family, which carries the Romanov descent of Queen Olga.
He was educated at Krebs' School in Copenhagen and spent a year at the École des Roches in Normandy. He studied at Aarhus University, where he took a master's degree in political science, and spent a year at Harvard. He also served in all three branches of the Danish armed forces and completed the training of the navy's Frogman Corps, the special operations unit, under the nickname "Pingo". An endurance athlete, he has run marathons, taken part in the four-month Sirius 2000 sledge expedition across north-eastern Greenland, and served as a member of the International Olympic Committee.
In 2004 he married Mary Donaldson, born in Tasmania, Australia; they have four children: Christian, Isabella, and the twins Vincent and Josephine. Christian is now crown prince.
On 14 January 2024 his mother abdicated, and he was proclaimed king by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen from the balcony of Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen as Frederik X, taking the motto "United, committed, for the Kingdom of Denmark". As king he performs the constitutional duties of the Danish crown, including the formal appointment of governments, and represents Denmark abroad. Through him, the descent from a grand duchess born at Peterhof continues on the Danish throne.
