Gregori Warchavchik — architect (modernism) with roots in the Russian Empire
Gregori Warchavchik was a Ukrainian-born architect who emigrated to Brazil and designed the first modernist building in Latin America — the Casa Modernista in São Paulo (1930). A collaborator of Le Corbusier and pivotal figure in Brazilian architectural history, he transformed the country's built environment.
Tracing the roots — Odessa
Born in Odessa (Russian Empire, now Ukraine) in 1896, Warchavchik studied in Rome before making Brazil his home in 1923. His Casa Modernista in São Paulo was a declaration of architectural revolution — the modernist movement arriving in Latin America through the hands of a Ukrainian Jewish immigrant from Odessa.
Odessa. At the time, this region lay within the Russian Empire, which spanned from Poland to the Pacific.
