Hector Babenco was an Argentine-Brazilian film director of Ukrainian-Russian Jewish descent who became one of Latin America's most internationally acclaimed filmmakers. His films — Pixote, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Ironweed, Carandiru — earned Academy Award nominations and international prizes.
