Hyman Rickover — admiral (nuclear navy) with roots in the Russian Empire
Hyman Rickover was a United States Navy admiral born in Makow Mazowiecki (then Russian Empire, now Poland) who became known as the Father of the Nuclear Navy. He oversaw the development of nuclear-powered submarines and the USS Nautilus — the world's first nuclear-powered vessel — transforming American naval power and global geopolitics.
Tracing the roots — Maków (Poland)
Born in Maków (Russian Empire) in 1900 to Jewish parents who emigrated to New York when he was six, Rickover grew up speaking Yiddish before learning English. His experience as an immigrant outsider who rose to the highest levels of the US military establishment — facing anti-Semitism at every step — made his achievement all the more remarkable.
Maków (Poland). At the time, this region lay within the Russian Empire, which spanned from Poland to the Pacific.
