Joan Rivers — comedian with roots in the Russian Empire
Joan Rivers was an American comedian, actress, writer, producer, and television host who became one of the most influential and groundbreaking comedians of the 20th century. As a pioneer of confessional, self-deprecating comedy, she opened doors for generations of women in stand-up and built a career lasting over 50 years.
Tracing the roots — Russia
Born Joan Alexandra Molinsky in Brooklyn in 1933 to Meyer Molinsky, whose family had emigrated from Odessa and the Russian Empire, and Beatrice Grushman, also of Russian-Jewish origin, Rivers grew up in the Jewish immigrant world of New York. Her comedy — savage, self-aware, fearless — was the laughter of a woman who knew survival was the only victory that counted.
Russia. At the time, this region lay within the Russian Empire, which spanned from Poland to the Pacific.
