Biography

Joseph Schenckstudio head (20th) with roots in the Russian Empire

Joseph Schenck was a Russian-born American film producer and studio executive who co-founded 20th Century Pictures (later 20th Century Fox) and served as Chairman of United Artists. One of Hollywood's genuine founding fathers, he helped build the studio system from scratch.

Russian Connection

Tracing the roots — Rybinsk

Born Osip Sheinker in Rybinsk (Russian Empire) in 1876, Schenck emigrated to New York as a young man and entered the entertainment business. His journey from Rybinsk to the chairmanship of 20th Century Fox is one of the great immigrant ascents — a Russian boy who arrived speaking no English and ended up co-creating the institution that made The Sound of Music and Star Wars.
