Tracing the roots — Russia
Born in Russia and educated in Russia's world-class chess academies, Alekseenko's Candidates Tournament participation placed him among the world's eight strongest players. His switch to Austria enables him to continue representing a federation in team championships and international events from which Russian players are excluded.
