Nicolai Geddaopera with roots in the Russian Empire

Russian Connection

Tracing the roots — Novocherkassk

His father Mikhail Ustinov was a Russian Don Cossack who had emigrated to Sweden after the Revolution, and Nicolai grew up bilingual in Russian and Swedish. His Russian heritage was central to his artistic identity — he specialised in Russian opera and lieder, and his Russian upbringing gave him interpretive depth that set him apart from every other tenor of his generation.
