Nikolai Durov is a Russian mathematician and programmer born in Leningrad who co-founded VKontakte (Russia's Facebook) with his brother Pavel Durov, and then co-developed the technical architecture of Telegram. One of the most gifted programmers of his generation, he designed the MTProto encryption protocol that underpins Telegram's security.
