Otto Struve — astronomer with roots in the Russian Empire
Otto Struve was a Ukrainian-American astronomer born in Kharkiv into the most celebrated family in the history of astronomy — four generations of Struve astronomers. He became one of the most important American astronomers of the 20th century and was the first Director of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.

Born in Kharkiv (Russian Empire, now Ukraine) in 1897, the great-great-grandson of Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve who built the Pulkovo Observatory, Otto escaped the Russian Civil War and built his career in America. His Kharkiv origins and his dynasty's deep roots in Russian Imperial science make him one of the most direct transfers of Russian scientific culture to the United States.
