Tracing the roots — Moscow (Russia)
Born in Moscow in 1955 to a father of Latvian-Jewish origin, Aven was a leading Russian economist before entering banking. His Latvian citizenship reflects his father's heritage. He was sanctioned by the EU and UK after 2022, with his art collection (including major Bacon and Freud works) frozen in the UK.
