Stella Adler — acting coach (the method) with roots in the Russian Empire
Stella Adler was an American actress and acting teacher whose Stella Adler Studio of Acting produced some of Hollywood's greatest stars. The daughter of Yiddish theatre legend Jacob Adler — born in Odessa — she studied directly with Konstantin Stanislavski in Paris (1934) and developed a rival approach to Lee Strasberg's Method that emphasised imagination over personal memory.
Tracing the roots — Odessa
The daughter of Jacob Adler — who was born in Odessa (Russian Empire) and became the greatest Yiddish theatre actor in American history — Stella grew up in the theatre world that her Odessa-born father created. She was trained in the Russian theatrical tradition at its source, having been personally corrected by Stanislavski himself in Paris.
Odessa. At the time, this region lay within the Russian Empire, which spanned from Poland to the Pacific.
