Walter Koenig is an American actor best known for playing Ensign Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek series (NBC, 1966-1969) and subsequent Star Trek films. His Russian-accented character became one of the most beloved in science fiction television history.

Born in Chicago in 1936 to parents who had emigrated from Lithuania (Russian Empire), Koenig grew up in the immigrant Jewish world of the Midwest. His casting as the Russian navigator Chekov — specifically conceived as a Russian character for Cold War cultural diplomacy — gave him a role that resonated deeply with his own Eastern European heritage.
