Yuri Shevchuk — rock legend (ddt) with roots in the USSR
Yuri Shevchuk is a Russian rock musician born in Magadan who has fronted DDT — one of the most important and politically courageous bands in Russian rock history — since 1980. He has consistently spoken out against Russian government policies and against the Ukraine war.
Tracing the roots — Magadan
Born in Magadan in 1957 — the city historically associated with the Kolyma Gulag camps where millions died — Shevchuk grew up surrounded by the legacy of Stalinist terror. His entire artistic career has been shaped by that environment: DDT's music consistently challenges authority, and Shevchuk publicly opposed both the Chechen wars and the Ukraine invasion.
Magadan. At the time, this region was one of the fifteen republics of the Soviet Union.
