Биография

Иммануил Нобельengineer / industrialist с корнями из Russian Empire

Immanuel Nobel was a Swedish builder, engineer and inventor whose career in Stockholm ended in bankruptcy in the 1830s. In 1838 he left for Russia, and in Saint Petersburg found the state patronage that Sweden had not offered him. He established a machine works in the capital and developed naval mines for the Imperial Russian Navy, work that was taken up seriously during the Crimean War.

The family followed him to Saint Petersburg in 1842. His four surviving sons — Robert, Ludvig, Alfred and Emil — grew up in the Russian capital and were educated there by private tutors, an unusually thorough scientific schooling that all four would draw on.

The Russian venture ended as the Stockholm one had. When the war concluded and state orders stopped, the business failed in 1859. Immanuel returned to Stockholm with his wife Andriette and the two younger sons, Alfred and Emil. Robert and Ludvig stayed in Russia.

That division determined what followed. The Swedish branch developed nitroglycerine and then dynamite; the Russian branch went into machine-building and, in the 1870s, into Caspian oil. Immanuel died in 1872, before either outcome was complete, and is remembered less for his own inventions than as the reason a Swedish family spent two generations inside the Russian Empire.

The bankruptcy that split the family across two countries set up everything that followed: the Russian branch found oil, the Swedish branch found dynamite.

Moved to Saint Petersburg in 1838 and built a machine works supplying the Russian navy, including naval mines used in the Crimean War. His business collapsed in 1859 when state orders ended; he returned to Stockholm with his wife Andriette and sons Alfred and Emil, while Ludvig and Robert remained in Russia.
