Людвиг Нобель — industrialist / engineer с корнями из Russian Empire
Ludvig Nobel was born in Stockholm in 1831 and moved to Saint Petersburg as a boy of eleven when his father Immanuel established a machine works supplying the Imperial Russian Navy. When the family business failed in 1859 and his parents returned to Sweden, Ludvig stayed. He rebuilt the Saint Petersburg works under his own name into one of the most significant engineering firms in the Russian Empire, producing machinery, armaments and precision equipment.
In 1873 he sent his brother Robert to the Caucasus with 25,000 rubles to buy walnut wood for rifle stocks. Robert spent the money on a small refinery and a plot of land at Baku instead. Ludvig examined the opportunity, judged it substantial, and committed heavily. In 1879 the brothers, with their brother Alfred and Baron Peter von Bilderling, reorganised the venture as a joint-stock company headquartered in Saint Petersburg: the Nobel Brothers Petroleum Production Company, known as Branobel.
Ludvig ran it until his death and made it one of the largest oil companies in the world. Much of that came from solving transport and logistics rather than extraction. He introduced oil pipelines to Russia, brought in railway tank wagons, and commissioned the Zoroaster, generally recognised as the first commercially successful oil tanker, built in sections in Sweden and assembled on the Caspian. By the turn of the century Russian output would briefly exceed that of the United States, and Branobel was its largest single producer.
He died at Cannes in 1888. Several European newspapers confused the brothers and published obituaries of Alfred instead, describing him in harsh terms as a man who had made his fortune from explosives. Alfred read them. The episode is widely credited with prompting the will that established the Nobel Prizes — which means that the prize is connected, at one remove, to a death in the family's Russian oil business.

When he died at Cannes in 1888, several newspapers confused him with his brother and printed Alfred's obituary instead, condemning him as a munitions maker. That error is widely credited with prompting Alfred to endow the Nobel Prize.
