Moe Howard — stooge with roots in the Russian Empire
Moe Howard (born Moses Harry Horwitz) was the leader and creative director of The Three Stooges — the comedy trio whose 190 short films remain endlessly rewatchable. The aggressive, self-appointed boss with the bowl haircut, Moe was the disciplinarian whose violence against his brothers created some of American comedy's most anarchic moments.
Tracing the roots — USA
Born in Brooklyn in 1897 to Jennie Gorovitz and Solomon Horwitz, both Jewish immigrants from Lithuania and Russia (Russian Empire), Moe grew up in the same Yiddish-speaking immigrant household as his brothers Shemp and Curly. The Stooges' comedy — chaotic, anarchic, utterly indifferent to dignity — is the immigrant generation's laughter at everything that polite America held sacred.
