Shemp Howard — stooge with roots in the Russian Empire
Shemp Howard (born Samuel Horwitz) was the eldest Howard brother and an original member of The Three Stooges before Curly replaced him. He later returned after Curly's stroke and appeared in 73 Stooges shorts — his rubbery, exaggerated style making him a beloved figure in American comedy.
Tracing the roots — USA
Born in Brooklyn in 1895 to Jennie Gorovitz and Solomon Horwitz — Jewish immigrants from Lithuania and Russia (Russian Empire) — Shemp grew up in the same Yiddish-speaking immigrant household as his brothers Moe and Curly. Three brothers from the same Russian-Jewish immigrant family becoming three of America's most beloved comedians is a story only the immigrant experience could produce.
