Teodor Currentzis is a Greek conductor born in Athens who trained at the St. Petersburg Conservatory under Ilya Musin and built his career entirely within the Russian musical world — founding the MusicAeterna ensemble and becoming Artistic Director of the Perm Opera. He is one of the most radical and acclaimed conductors of his generation.

Russian Connection

Tracing the roots — Athens (Rus Ed.)

Born in Athens in 1972, Currentzis moved to St. Petersburg at age 18 to study conducting and spent his entire formative and professional life within the Russian musical tradition. His Russian identity — he speaks Russian fluently and has lived in Russia for decades — is more complete than many born there. He faced controversy for remaining in Russia after 2022.
