Tracing the roots — Athens (Rus Ed.)
Born in Athens in 1972, Currentzis moved to St. Petersburg at age 18 to study conducting and spent his entire formative and professional life within the Russian musical tradition. His Russian identity — he speaks Russian fluently and has lived in Russia for decades — is more complete than many born there. He faced controversy for remaining in Russia after 2022.
