Theodore Bikel — actor with roots in the Russian Empire
Theodore Bikel was an Austrian-American actor, folk singer, and activist born in Vienna to parents from Ukraine who became one of Broadway's most beloved figures — playing the original Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music (1959) and Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof over 2,000 times. He was also a celebrated folk singer and civil rights activist.
Tracing the roots — Bukovina roots
Born in Vienna in 1924 to parents who had emigrated from Ukraine (Russian Empire) — specifically from Zolochiv (the same town as Nobel laureate Roald Hoffmann) — Bikel grew up in a Yiddish-speaking Ukrainian Jewish household. His 2,000+ performances as Tevye were acts of cultural devotion to the world his parents' generation had carried from Ukraine.
